About Me
Dr. Miguel Ángel Cano is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and a Faculty Affiliate of the Center for Research on U.S. Latino HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse at Florida International University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and minored in sociology and Chicano (Mexican American) studies at Arizona State University. Dr. Cano also completed a Doctorate in Psychology from Texas A&M University, Master of Public Health from the Texas A&M Health Science Center, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Department of Health Disparities Research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Research Statement
Dr. Cano’s Program of research concentrates on the prevention of substance use disorders and psychiatric disorders; and aims to help understand and reduce health disparities and health inequities affecting Hispanic communities and other socially disadvantaged populations. His primary research interests focus on (1) coping resources, social determinants, and ethnocultural determinants of health risk behavior and psychiatric disorders/symptomatology; and (2) evidence-based prevention interventions for underserved and socially disadvantaged populations. To support his program of research, Dr. Cano has received funding from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. In 2014 he received the Outstanding Presentation Award from the American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry and in 2016 he received the National Award of Excellence in Research by a New Investigator from the National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse.
